The ego loves masks, for a mask protects the fragile self-image. “I am this nation.” “I am this belief.” “I am this body, this wound, this story.” The moment the Soul begins to remember what it is, the masks become heavy, burdensome. You begin to see how false they are—not only in others, but most painfully, in yourself.
